Oil pulling is a traditional Ayurvedic practice that’s been used for oral health for over 3,000 years. It sounds strange — swishing a tablespoon of oil around your mouth for 20 minutes — but the research behind it is surprisingly solid. Several clinical trials have compared it directly to chlorhexidine mouthwash and found comparable results for reducing bacteria, plaque, and gum inflammation.

Coconut oil is the most popular oil for pulling because its lauric acid converts to monolaurin, which has specific antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans — the main bacteria responsible for tooth decay.

What the Research Actually Shows

  • A study in the Journal of Contemporary Dental Practice found oil pulling with coconut oil reduced S. mutans bacteria in saliva significantly after 2 weeks
  • A randomized controlled trial comparing coconut oil pulling to chlorhexidine mouthwash found comparable reductions in plaque and gingival scores
  • Studies show measurable improvement in gum inflammation (gingivitis) within 2 to 3 weeks of daily oil pulling
  • Multiple studies confirm reduction in plaque accumulation comparable to standard mouthwash
  • No studies show oil pulling replaces brushing and flossing — it’s an addition, not a substitute

How to Do Coconut Oil Pulling — Step by Step

Step 1 — Time it right: Do oil pulling first thing in the morning before eating, drinking, or brushing. The bacterial load is highest overnight and pulling works best on an empty stomach.

Step 2 — Amount: 1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil. If it’s solid, it will melt within seconds in your mouth. Start with 1 teaspoon if you’re new to it and work up.

Step 3 — Swish gently: Move the oil through and around all areas of the mouth — between teeth, around gums, under the tongue. Gentle swishing, not vigorous gargling. Vigorous swishing causes jaw fatigue and isn’t more effective.

Step 4 — Duration: 10 to 20 minutes. Most studies used 10 minutes and found significant results. 20 minutes produces marginally better results. Start with 5 minutes if 10 feels too long and build up gradually.

Step 5 — Spit and rinse: Spit into the trash — never the sink, the oil solidifies and clogs drains over time. Rinse with warm water. Some people use saltwater to rinse for added antimicrobial effect.

Step 6 — Brush normally: Brush teeth after oil pulling as normal. Do not swallow the oil — it contains the bacteria and toxins pulled from your mouth.

What to Expect and When

Fresher breath is usually the first thing people notice — within the first few days. Reduced morning plaque buildup appears within 1 to 2 weeks. Gum sensitivity improvement and reduced bleeding when brushing shows up around weeks 2 to 3. Teeth whitening effect is gradual — a modest surface stain removal over 4 to 6 weeks of daily pulling. The whitening is from surface stain removal, not bleaching.

What Oil Pulling Does NOT Do

  • It does not detox the body — the oil stays in the mouth
  • It does not replace brushing and flossing
  • It does not cure existing cavities or reverse severe gum disease
  • It does not whiten teeth through bleaching — only removes surface stains

The Short Version

1 tablespoon coconut oil, first thing in the morning, swish gently for 10 minutes, spit into trash, rinse, brush normally. Do it daily for 2 weeks. You will notice fresher breath and reduced morning plaque almost immediately. Consistent daily practice for 4 to 6 weeks produces the most significant oral health improvements.
